Product Introduction
A Sodium-based Bentonite Waterproof Blanket, technically known as a Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL), is a high-performance environmental liner. It consists of a layer of high-swelling sodium bentonite clay sandwiched between two layers of geotextiles (usually a woven and a non-woven layer), which are needle-punched together to form a cohesive, "self-healing" waterproof barrier.
Structural Composition
A standard GCL is a "sandwich" of three components:
Top Layer (Non-woven Geotextile): Provides protection and allows the needle-punching fibers to lock through.
Core Layer (Natural Sodium Bentonite): The active waterproofing agent (usually applied at a rate of 4.5–5.0 kg/m²).
Bottom Layer (Woven Geotextile): Provides high tensile strength and structural integrity to the blanket.
Working Principle
How It Works: The "Self-Healing" Principle
The core of the GCL is the Sodium Bentonite, a natural clay with unique properties:
Hydration & Expansion: When sodium bentonite comes into contact with water, it can swell up to 15 to 20 times its dry volume.
Confined Compression: Because the clay is trapped between the needle-punched geotextiles and covered by soil or concrete, it cannot expand freely. Instead, it transforms into a dense, monolithic, and impermeable gelatinous layer.
Self-Healing: If the blanket is punctured (e.g., by a nail or a sharp stone), the surrounding bentonite hydrates and expands into the void, effectively "plugging" the leak automatically.

Bentonite blankets are preferred for projects where liquid containment is critical but ease of installation is required:
1、Environmental Protection: Landfill bottom liners and caps to prevent leachate from escaping.
2、Water Conservancy: Lining for artificial lakes, irrigation canals, and reservoirs.
3、Infrastructure: Waterproofing for subway tunnels, underground garages, and building basements.
4、Ecological Restoration: Lining for wetlands and ponds where a natural (clay-based) barrier is preferred over plastic membranes.
